Megan's Garden

Megan's hard work makes the Utah Dahlia Society a huge success and that same dedication shows in her own garden.   Her colorful choices of dahlias along with many beautiful annuals and perennials make her garden a showpiece.

 Show n' Tell

 Miss Delilah of course

 Victoria Ann
This is an extra special dahlia that just happens to be named Badger Twinkle.

Megan surrounded by the beauty she and her husband, Bruce have created.   The raised bed gives her enough space to plant more dahlias.

Annuals and perennial plants accent the landscape.  Megan has plans to terrace more of the hill to add another dahlia bed.  We all want more space for just a few more it seems.
The flower bed that welcomes you to the Badger home.....
.....along with Bentley.  He is a sweet boy and loves to spend his days outside with the pretty flowers.

UDS Demonstration Garden

Our garden tour this week is the
Utah Dahlia Society's own Demonstration Garden.
It is a lovely garden growing on land lent to us by
The Granger Christian Church located at
3232 West 4100 South in Salt Lake City.
It is an appropriate spot because it is a little slice of heaven for us to be able to try different varieties of dahlias to see how they do in this harsh climate.

We are very pleased to have this very special plant in our garden this year.  It is a seedling donated to us by
Steve Nowotarski, a generous member of the ADS Board.  The dahlia is going to be named for the ADS Centennial which will be in 2015.
We are watching this plant carefully and can't wait to see the bloom.

A mass planting of Miss Delilah, one of our favorite varieties for it's  low growing habit in this climate and the abundance of blooms throughout the season.
Our fund raising efforts were put to good use by buying  new stakes for the entire garden this year.  They are made from metal conduit, cut to size and drilled so we can attach each plant's identification information.

Garden Tour - Karen Crook

I just had a "BRILLIANT" idea to go to one of our willing Utah Dahlia Society member's garden each week of the blooming season and feature the photos here.
I will start with my own this week.
Thanks for dropping by to take a look.
This year I planted a variety from a tiny Dot Com to an "A" size Zoey Rae.  I love the diversity of the dahlia and am taking full advantage of it with the varieties I chose.

 Zoey Rae
 White Nettie
 Castle Drive
 Snoho Sonja
 Magic Moment
 Miss Delilah
When some of my roses died due to a water problem we put in a pump to correct the problem but I kept the space open for more dahlias.  I enjoy the blooms of both.

Utah Dahlia Society June, 2013 Meeting

The Utah Dahlia Society held a meeting on June 19, 2013 at our demonstration garden.  It was a great occasion to get together, compare notes and see the new stakes that were purchased with funds from our tuber sales.  We are trying stakes made of conduit hand cut to size and drilled for Mark's special tags.  We are hoping they will be stronger and hold up to the wind and weight of the larger plants.
Megan made sure everyone had a prize and an opportunity for a treat.

Our dahlias are off to a good start.
 Mark Hurst, Club President
This was a special occasion.  Lumpy has been a member of the UDS from the beginning but this was his very first meeting he attended.  He and Mark started the demo garden and we appreciate all the work he has done to make it a success.
Becky and Spence.   Spence is the ultimate gardener growing everything from apricots to zucchini including worms and of course hundreds of dahlia plants!  He was kind enough to "plant" two buckets full of his worms in the demo garden to make our soil even better.  Thanks Spence!!
No good deed goes unpunished or so it would seem for hard working Steve.   He was working at the local Community Garden and broke his ankle.
We all send him our best and wish him a speedy recovery.

2013 Tuber Sale

Congratulations to the Utah Dahlia Society's Members for stepping up and making our 2013 one of our best tuber sales ever.  We were disappointed that many of our tubers from the demo garden had rotted over the winter.   Many of our members dug deep and gave us more than we could of hoped for to supply our sale.
THANK YOU!
Also, Thank you to Steve, an ADS Board member that came to our aide and sent us tubers from his garden. He also included some that are very special for our demo garden that we are looking forward to growing.

Our members only sale was held on
Friday, April 19 at the Garden Center
and the Public Sale followed on
 Saturday, April 20th.

Steve is always a great help
 along with Mark and Ryan

Karen and Megan also sold tubers at Millcreek Gardens to wrap up the tuber sales.  Thanks to them for their hospitality.
Thanks again to Bill for the great photos.

American Dahlia Society

The Utah Dahlia Society was honored to have the American Dahlia Society Board visit Salt Lake City for their annual meeting in April, 2013.
They were very gracious and held a class on April 12th at the Shilo Inn for the UDS members that were interested in judging.  It was very informative and we appreciated the time and effort they put into the class.
The following day on Saturday, April 13 our very own UDS member, Elizabeth shared lovely accommodations at
City Creek Commons for a BBQ dinner
 catered by Joe Morely BBQ
for the UDS to welcome and pay tribute to the ADS.
It was a great time to get to know one another and learn many tips for making a successful Society.
MANY THANKS TO THE AMERICAN DAHLIA SOCIETY BOARD MEMBERS!

Thank you to Elizabeth and Bill for the photos.
And as always, thanks to Megan for her efforts.
